If you are fairly new to playing paintball, most likely you have researched buying used paintball gear at some point. Luckily, now days you can do a ton of research without leaving your home. One of the most popular questions we at Pro Edge Paintball in Houston get is “Do Paintball Tanks Expire”? The short answer to this question is yes they do. When researching used paintball air tanks, there are a few things to watch out for.
The main concern when purchasing a used paintball air tank is the expiration on the air tank. With each bottle made, there is a date stamped or printed onto the bottle. This date tells you the month and year the air tank was made. For the majority of paintball tanks, the life span of a bottle is five years.
So to specifically answer the question, do paintball tanks expire, the answer is yes 5 years after the manufactured date stamped onto the bottle. If your paintball tank is expired, this doesn’t mean you need to throw it away. Some paintball tanks can be re stamped or what is called “hydro tested”. To have a paintball tank hydro tested is $45 at our location and usually takes 2 weeks.
If you currently own a CO2 paintball tank that is out of date, it most likely does not make sense for you to pay $45 to have your tank tested and re stamped as CO2 paintball tanks will cost anywhere from $20-$30 for a new one. However, if you own a carbon fiber compressed air tank or what some call an HPA tank, these air systems will cost $100-$200 new so paying $45 to be tested is the smarter financial decision.
If you are unsure of the date on your paintball air system, below are a couple images to help you out. If you are still unsure, please stop by Pro Edge any time during businesses hours and we will be more than happy to assist in finding the date and helping you make a smart decision with your air system.
